A north east aspect with little sunshine could limit the type of vegs you grow successfully but you should be able to grow spinach, swiss chard (like spinach), salad leaves. You may find that climbing beans (like runner beans, Climbing French Beans) will be OK once they climb up their poles towards more sunlight. If you like tomatoes, tumbling tomatoes (tumbling Red or tumbling yellow) can be grown in 10" deep containers which can be located in the sunnier spots.

Take a good look at your garden and work out where the sunniest spots are and decide whether this is where you are prepared to locate your vegetable patch.

Blackberries will grow up against a north facing fence and still fruit successfully. they may just ripen a little later than others.
  • I have always grown strawberries but last year threw myself into it and grew salad leaves, tomatoes, and carrots too all of which came out brilliantly. I too got carried away and ended up with a forest of delicious tomoatoes, I spent a huge amount of time making chutneys and freezing tomato base sauces which I am still enjoying! :j I grew my carrots in plastic trugs with good results.

I have moved now though and have no garden, just a front and back yard, but still plan on growing in containers and gro bags.

I definately agree grow food you like, and only plant a few seeds at a time. You can always stagger them and plant a few more in a few weeks time. I bought my seeds last year from Poundland. They did a few different variety packs with half a dozen different types of seeds - all grew brilliantly so would definately recommend these if anyone sees them.
It is only a bargain if you need it!

Please, please take note, don't plant all of the seeds in the packets, last year we had over 20 tomato plants because the hubby got carried away, and it is addictive!!

Will unused seeds keep until next year if you don't use the whole packet? If so, what's the best way to store them, please?

I second the votes for Lidl/Aldi/Wilko/Poundland seeds....have had much success with them. We too had FAR too many tomatoes last yr (embarrassed (sp?) smiley). Poundland do some green pop-up containers, (think they are called garden waste bins?) which are small, but portable & we found excellent for our toms/beet/onions... May be looking out for some more this year. I got some garden waste sacks ( made of the same stuff as the 're-usable grow bags' that B&Q sell at about £15 for 3!) for about £2.50 each?

Lots of great ideas here. I have just been offered an allotment :) very happy but I know it will be a struggle the first few years. It has apparently been abandoned and is very overgrown

  • If you want to get started I believe you can plant garlic cloves (poundland have them). Also you could start growing peppers/chillies inside.

Aldi have seeds in at 39p a packet including mixed salad seeds and loads of veg so would go there if it was me. I subscribed to kitchen gardner and there is loads of stuff in there

I would really recommend Poundland for the 6 in a pack different veg .Had great success with these last year,

where do you get the thick rubble sacks? All the ones I have seen are really thin!

Poundland have these, also Asda but more expensive. Absolutely ideal for potatoes.
