dacouch, can you advise on how careful removals firms are with protecting carpets? The house we are about to leave of has cream carpets throughout and I have a very strict no-shoes policy with family and visitors, and I would like to keep the carpets nice for our buyers.
It would be very difficult for removals men to keep taking their shoes on and off as they leave the house with heavy items of furniture, so what's the best way to ensure the carpets stay clean, especially if it's a wet day?Extra Payment Every Week Challenge:

If you use a decent removal company they will normally put down either koretex (Probably spelt incorrectly) or removal blankets (They are the same as horse blankets) on the carpet in the walk areas. If it's dry you should be ok, if it's been raining you need to make sure they cover as much as possible.
A good removal company should come out and survey your house and note any unusual features such as narrow doors, unusual items such as wine collection. They will should also ask you for anything you require which would be when you mention about your prized carpet. It's not unusual for someone to ask this so don't worry, if need be they may have one person inside to move the items around the house once they are in and the others to bring them inside (Obviously this may increase the price a little).
Another one I forgot and this is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT is have your kettle, milk, sugar and tea / coffee in a seperate bag so when you want a cuppa you know where it is.0 -
Buy those plastic runner thingys to protect the carpeting directly inside the front door. Can't think of what you could use for the rooms and the stair-case....0

Goldengirl28 I also miss read it and thought he was getting the rugby lads to help with the threshold...lol
A rugby team could be good movers as they are used to working as a team which makes things so much easier. Just get your husband to tell them your not in a rush and you want to avoid any damage where possible.
The rugby players are a good idea as it gives your husband an excellent excuse to go out on the lash with the lads as after all he has to buy them a few drinks for the help they gave him!
Here is an ebay return for moving boxes, the bubble wrap is handy for wrapping your mirrors, pictures and fragile items. Hanging garment boxes are handy as they have a rail built in so you can hang your nice clothes in the box so they don't get damaged. If you buy the same type of boxes from a storage company or a removal company they will cost upwards of £120. (The boxes are also normally a standard size which makes packing them in a van easier.

Remember to write Fragile on the boxes of any fragile items and an arrow if the items need to be a certain way up.0 -

just an update from my previous post as requested.
we moved yesterday, got a removal co to pack everything and move for us. It was great. Very easy and stress free (we even went out for a couple of hours while they were packing) and we were able to live as normal right up to move day. And (touch wood) so far we have not found any broken items - they definitely packed better than I would have. Not cheap but really worth it.
A few things to think of if you are going to do it this way:
- They will pack everything that is not nailed down, so if there are things you want to keep un-packed till the last minute (eg kettle/tea making stuff) then point this out.
- Check everywhere afterwards, they missed one or two bits on high shelves/back of cupboard etc.
- Provide a list of where things are going the other end so they can pack all together.
- Bear in mind they will be going through your drawers, cupboards etc so you might want to pack any very personal items yourself!
anyway best of luck with your move!0 -
Glad your move went well. We last moved over twenty years ago. This involved moving 250 miles, putting possessions in storage for six months, temporary accommodation until house purchase was completed. The removal firm packed for us which really took the strain out of moving. There was no pressure from the buyers wanting to be in as we had the removal done the day before we left-we slept on an airbed that night, camping indoors. The only damage was to the only valuable items of furniture we had-an antique table and new dresser. Both were repaired under their insurance.
One thing to be aware of-they did not unpack (as I recall)-so we were under a lot of pressure to empty their boxes so they could take them away. I remember being boxed into the kitchen!0 -
Great thread :T
Has anyone got a ballpark figure for my planning sheet?
A three/four bed house; 1 double bed, 2 singles, 4 wardrobes, 4 chest of drawers, 3 computer desks, all the usual family items, 1 living/dining room, kichen, 2 garden sheds (just items, not sheds) to move.
Live in north west, only moving 2 miles away, so want just a removal firm (we will pack ourselves). Any idea of an average cost?

Get the professionals in and check the insurance. Check your insurance as well. Inform your insurance companies of your move.
I did this twice in 6 months and tried to skimp the 2nd time but I was wrong. You end up with stuff all over the place.0
