Hi everyone, feeling down today. Been on a dmp for 4 years now, started with £18,500 debt but now down to £7,500. But it seems to be lasting forever!
Im now on maternity leave which is £120 a week, plus child benefit of £20 and taxcredit £21, SO ive had to lower my payments which is making the dmp last even longer now.
Some days i think about bankruptcy just to get out of this black hole and have a clean slate.
Has anyone got any advice or even just some pma for me?

My grandmother used to say "never a lender or borrower be" and would refer to credit as "getting it on the never ever". I thought I knew better but now I fully understand what she meant. I was £48,000 in debt and made my first payment to a DMP in November 2003, my final payment will be in April 2010 so yes, it does end but it's a long haul. You just have to focus on the positives and be grateful for the things in life you have that are free.0

FieryLeo, look how much yo have achieved!!!
You are well over half way now, and things will pick up in speed again after your maternity leave is complete.
You have done soooo well, have a little one (awaiting to arrive?) to love and cherish and have made a giant dent in those debts.
Hold your head up high and be proud of what you have done.
Stick with it.
Good luck!2 angels in heaven :A0 -
I think everyone has days like this, i know i do, in four years you've cleared well over half of your debt £11,000! thats fantastic! When i look at how much i've reduced my debt by i also try to think how much bigger it would have been by now if i'd carried on the same way, you should do the same, even though it may be taking what feels like forever it's prob 1st time in years its going down not up :T congrats on being a new mum thats priceless :beer:get rid of all the pounds by summer !!

Hi Fieryleo, well done so far.
One thing to remind yourself every now and then is how much you have learnt along the way and the fact that you never, ever have to be in debt again.
I have been debt free since last August and the relief is amazing.

fieryleo1984 - Don'tr focus on how far you have got to go, see how far you have come - and you have done really well!! I know it is a burden - i have just started my story and do get abit depressed, but the only way is to move and think forward. Good luck with the rest of your journey and many congrats on your baby0

i agree. it's like running on a treadmill, seeing you've got 20 minutes to go, sighing, and not realising that you've actually been running for 40 minutes already.0 -
If baby is 12 weeks then you can start looking at returning to work - make sure you do the maths on child care etc vs work - you might find that you are better off returning to working evening or night shifts where your OH can look after the baby. I found Childminder worked out much cheaper than nurseries - not that it mattered - I don't like nurseries anyway

The sooner you up your income the quicker you'll be free of the pesky DMP
