Windscreen wipers
For all you clever clogs out there, this is just a very basic question because I have never done it before!!
I have a Polo and want to change the windscreen wipers. Can I buy any wipers or should I go to VW and get the specific ones for my Polo? I guess they will be much dearer in the dealership but I would rather get those than ones that dont do the job properly.
Finally, are they easy to replace?
Many thanks
Jay

Almost certain buying from dealer will be more expensive, best if you use a local car parts shop, will be a lot cheaper and will do the job just as well.
If you are really lucky; they will fit for you (free). As a last resort Halfords, bit more expensive and for couple of quid will fit0 -
Thanks for your very prompt reply.
I take it that I can buy any wipers that say fit Polo and that going to VW does not make any difference (except to price!).
I'll give it a go fitting myself. If you say takes 5 mins I will allow myself 20 and will still be pleased if I get it sorted.
Cheers

Try Halfords or these guys - http://www.wiperblades.co.uk/0

If you go for very cheap ones you may find them to be inferior quality. I needed to replace fronts urgently on Jeep Cherokee, no Jeep dealer handy, so I bought from Wilkinsons to keep me going - very cheap but the carrier is thin and unsubstantial and they tend to rise off the screen at speed (the Jeep originals had a built in spoiler/vane, and the carrier was much chunkier).0

I'd recommend wiperblades too - I bought their aerofit blades and they're brilliant, just like the Bosch Super Plus blades except not as bulky. They can be slightly tricky to fit in comparison to the Bosch blades but not impossible.
If you are eligible for a Halfords Trade Card the Bosch blades are pretty good value.0 -
+1 for Bosch Super Plus blades.0

have you tried cleaning them (kitchen roll + vinegar)? gives them a bit more of a longer life....0

I got a local car parts shop to fit my last set. They didn't charge extra. :money:0

Wipers generally come in different lengths for different cars. Halfords has a book on the shelf that tells you which ones to get but I usually get mine off ebay. Just put polo aero wipers in. I'd reccommend a set of Aero ones, they're a different, better design to 'normal' ones and tend to be fitted to more expensive cars and newer fords. You should be able to get a decent set of all 3 for about £10-£15.
Fitting wise its easy. Pull the arm out like you do to wash it. Turn the wiper the wrong way round and pull it down the wiper arm, towards the car, and they just pop out. To fit just reverse the process. I seem to remember aero ones being slightly different to fit but they have instructions. Its not difficult; don't go to Halfords or your dealer it'll be expensive.0
