distressing a light fitting

I'm redecorating the living room and would like a wall light like this one
I don't have the money to buy it but have seen similar brass ones on ebay for a fraction of the price that I thought I could maybe distress myself. Does anyone know if it is possible and if so how would I go about doing it.
Many thanks in advance

The issue will be is are the "brass" ones on ebay truly brass or are they brass coloured plated steel? Non-ferrous metals like brass don't take paint very well but if its the latter then wire wool will take the lacquer off then a bit more elbow grease will reveal the steel underneath. You can then paint up from there but it will be a long job methinks if it looks like the one in your pic.

the technique is very similar to distressing furniture.
use your two colors, sprayed or hand painted on. ie cream & gold.
let it all dry properly. a few days.
then gently rub away with wire wool to get the look you want.Get some gorm.0
