First Direct Bank Charges

I have just had a letter from first direct saying that they are charging me £100 in overdraft fees for going £77 over my overdraft limit last month...so I messaged them explaining that due to personal circumstances beyond my control I went over my overdraft and that I would not be able to afford to pay there excessive charges and was there anything that they could do to help me out and got an answer back basically just saying no. No help offered! (I always thought that banks were there to help you with your money problems not to add to them!)
Does anyone have any ideas about how I can get them to be more helpful or reduce the charges? £100 seems a bit excessive to me!!
Thank You

How many DDs / SOs were not paid etc??0 -
5 card transactions that I had made before I realised that I was over my limit. Do not see how that could cost them £100 though??? I don't often get bank charges so unsure of what the norm is??0
