My mum was threatened with doorstep collection by one of her creditors if she did not pay a minimum of £17.00 off her credit card bill of £1,500. She explained to them that the CAB are currently dealing with her case, but the creditor insisted that she must still pay the £17.00, otherwise the doorstep collection would take place.

Let's be clear about this: The CAB is a volunteer organisation. They may "deal with things" for you but it doesn't mean that lenders have to take too much notice of that, they have just as much standing when it comes to "dealing with things" as your mate down the pub does. So saying that the CAB are dealing with it does not oblige the lender to go away I'm afraid.

She will need to resolve the issue by reaching a mutually satisfactory arrangement with the lender, possibly with the assistance of the CAB, but you and she needs to be clear on what the involvement of the CAB means here.

Does anybody know if my mum can do something about these threats? This particular creditor, our of all of them, has been the most obstinate and difficult in regard to ordering her to pay. And just WHAT would this "doorstep collection" process have entailed? To me, it smacks of bailiff tactics.

The "doorstep collection" process should in theory entail someone turning up cap in hand and asking for their money pretty please, as thats all they have the legal authority to do. Debt collectors are NOT bailiffs, and not even bailiffs can do very much without an appropriate court order in place instructing them. These people rely on people who think it effectively means bailiffs will visit, and aren't too clear on what bailiffs can and can't do anyway.

Someone has already pointed you to the thread on dealing with harassment from debt collectors. There's some real good advice there that your mother should follow, possibly with your help if she needs it.

If a debt collector knocks on her door she should tell them to go away, that they are not welcome and that they are trespassing. If they don't then leave, I'd suggest she phone the police.

    Hi ILW

I am happy to answer your question. People normally don't have so much interests on financial situations. I am sure circumstances and how to deal with people on debts have changed year by year.
Frail for me means not be ill or something else. Frail for me means also have a lack of knowledge about the matter or the circumstances. If you are not informed and dont have enough knowlegde, you can be a target for this kind of abusing people and they can use it as a sward to intimidate you.
I know also, sometimes you owe some sum of money bu, if you are in financial difficult, you should be treated fairly.
It seems that everyone accept this condition and get insulted or might threatened by that behaviour.
In some way you are vulnerable/frail about the lack of knowlegde of your right and this kind of people should be respectful and not attacking by words of "what I am going to do now if you don't pay a minimum or whatever".
Unfortunately I can write thousand of comments or opinion but it doesn't help to change the way to deal fairly.
If the Law allow to do that, thats maybe something it should be changed.
I just wanted to explain my point of you, but I am not anyone who can change the way, but at least I wouldn't let them to take an advance that I don't know the rules.
    That's all.
Have a nice day and thanks for the question. I do really like explain my self and show my interests.

Many people (including me) would find the term "frail" as demeaning and insulting, unless they were actually sick.
