Virus. Pc keeps shutting down

Options
I've had a few virus problems on my PC over the past few days.
I hoped I had sorted them out.
I'm running XP and have Malwarebytes,Avast, Zonealarm and Windows Defender. I also run CC Cleaner occaisionally.

All day, my pc keeps on shutting down.

It comes up with an error message and a timer which when down to zero reboots the pc.

The message I get is

Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher Service Terminated unexpectedly.

I have tried googling for an answer but the answers are either very old or I do not understand them.

I've tried running Malwarebytes and Spybot but they never get to the end of the scan before I get the message again.

Help anyone please.

Try running a MalwareBytes scan in Safe Mode with networking (F8 on boot). Make sure you have the latest version and update the definitions. Run a quick scan first, fix what it finds, and post the log here.

    Thanks
Managed to do a quick scan with Malwarebytes
    Nothing found
What I will try todo is a full scan in safemode abd post any results,

Further to the error message I posted, I forgot to put the first part of the message.

    It said

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Make sure all your windows updates are up to date then try this
    1. Click on Start | Run, type C:\Windows\System32\msiexec -unregister, and click OK.
    2. Repeat step 1 with this command C:\Windows\System32\msiexec -regserver and click OK.
    3. Then Reboot

    Thanks ian2211

Can I ask by doing what you are suggesting, what am I doing and why ?

I have tried to get into safe mode to do a full scan, but when I press enter on both safe mode and network safe mode it returns to the same menu, and I have to choose normal mode.

I am still unable to do a full scan due to being timed out and rebooting.

It looks like a problem I have seen before where the windows installer has become unregistered. If you can provide an error log from the event viewer on here (click on Start => Run and type eventvwr) and we can see if you have an error code 23.
I bookmarked this fix when I found it http://www.logos.com/ArticleViewer/561

I will see if I can find the link to the forum where I last saw it

    When typing eventvwr

I get a list of files in a box consisting of Application Error Records, Security Audit Records, System Error Records, Antivirus Custom Log Error Records and Internet Explorer Custom Log Error Records.

Which one do you need information from ?

    Thanks

Sounds more like XP not having the relevant updates.

If it happens again and you want to cancel a shutdown in progress. Go to the computer in question, hit Windows Key + R then type command below:

    shutdown -a

This will save you having to keep on restarting. In the meantime I'd be surprised if the security updates microsoft have, will not sort this. This particular issue was common about 6 years back.

I have just checked for updates and there are none available.

I did run updates on the 20th and 13th of this month.

Are you saying that when I get the error and it starts counting down to reboot, I should press the windows and r key together.

Will I have to do this everytime.

    Thanks
