Part time work and tax credits

Hello Everyone

I am coming to the end of my maternity leave and dont want to return to my current employment (stressful job on full time hours which cant be reduced to part time).

I have seen a job advertised for a couple of hours for around £120 before tax.

Does anyone know roughly how much child tax credits and working tax credits would be payable? This would be my main and only source of income.

Thanks in advance

No one can answer this without answering some questions.

    Who do you live with?
    Where is the father?
If you are separated, what is his contribution to his kids?
    Any savings?
Current benefits claimed and their amounts?

few hours for £120?? Wow that's amazing!!you need to be working
16 hours or more to get working tax credit. But also depends on your partners income

I say a few hours, its 20 hours.

We live alone, the dad works away and contributes more than enough to my son £100 + per month.

    Savings £1.73 :rotfl:

I get child tax credit of around £320ish, child benefit of £20 ish.

We've been surviving on my maternity pay and tax credits currently but now my maternity pay has stopped i'm looking into help with rent/council tax etc and wondering whether it would be viable for me to stay at home.

    Many Thanks

I you chose to stay at home you could claim income support which is £64 a week. You would lose your working tax credits and would only be allowed to keep £20 per week of maintenance.
  • So any ideas how much I would get child tax credits then?? I dont think its going to be viable really is it?

That website isnt anywhere near to accurate as on my current working wage it claims i'm entitled to full housing benefit and council tax benefit

Just wondered really if anyone else is earning close to what I would be and what they were roughly having... :)

ok, you have just the one child, who i take it, is still under 1yr? you say the dad works away, what does that mean? are you a couple or not? when hes not 'away' does he live with you?

as for the money your childs father pays, who says £100 is more than enough? if you arent a couple anymore, then i assume, you have contacted CSA? because if you dont return to work, then you will only be entitled to IS, and they will want to claim as much as they can off your childs father, to cover your benefit entitlement

If living alone, i assume you already claim reduced council tax? As for help with rent, i would have thought if earning £120/w you wouldnt be entitled to any

    But back to tax credits

a few Qs - how much have you earnt since April 09, how much will you be paying in childcare?

as a rough guide, someone earning £120/wk with one child (no childcare), will get roughly £6500/yr in CTC/WTC, so that would roughly double your income

however, dont return to work, and you would get about £2800/yr in CTC, plus IS

Sorry...my childs father and I have never been an item.
In the year 2008/2009 income wouldve been SMP x 36ish weeks-maternity leave started mid march 2009.

There will be no claim for help with childcare due to eager grandparents.

At the minute I have been payng full rent and full ctax minus 25% off for single person discount.

We've been surviving through savings that I built up during my pregnancy but these are diminishing quickly!!

    Many Thanks
