Fraudulent activity

Just come home to some post and there's a credit card statement belonging to some person we've never heard of.

We've rang the CC company and they've put a stop on the card but does this affect our credit rating now?

The card has been used in a few shops around town so I'm wondering how this person has managed to physically get a card without it being delivered to our house?

Thanks

Won't affect your credit rating, individuals are assessed, not addresses.

Have you been at the address long?

    We've lived here 5 years.

Not a repeat of another poster's mail redirect elapsing then :)

If they intercepted mail outside your door, it'd have to be the card and the pin - maybe your postie would know.

But basically, won't affect you one way or another, the card's fraud people are best placed to investigate it :)

Did you open the letter then?

    That is illegal.

What you should have done is written not known at this address and returned the envelope to sender.

I might ask our postman to see if the name rings any bells, though I suspect it's probably a false name.

Curiousity got the better of me, especially as it was obviously bank related and had our address on it.

The CS rep did ask us to return the letter but now you've got me worried that I might get in trouble for opening the letter ;)
  • I shouldnt worry about opening the letter, technically you shouldnt do it, but nothing will happen as a result of this.

Put the letter back in the envelope seal it back up and return it with maybe a post it note saying something like, Opened in error addressee not at this address...

Only if it's intentionally done to the detriment of the addressee. Which is almost certainly wasn't, so it isn't.

I think its better to open letters you know are bank related with your address rather than rely on the return address to deal with it!
You can always claim it was accidental. I'd rather face getting into trouble than the stress of fraud again.

I've been reading that the address where there has been a connection to fraudulent activity will be flagged on credit reports if you live at that address still. Though not your name. You aren't supposed to be discriminated against on that alone.

A big fat letter dropped through my box the other day, with my address showing but the name not visible in the address window. So
I opened it. Turned out to be someone's tax return (not mine), sent to the wrong address by their accountants.

Now, because I'd opened it, I could see who it was addressed to and was able to find out his correct address, so I sealed it up, wrote a note on the outside explaining the circumstances, and went out and put it through his letterbox.

Clearly what I should've done is to shake, bend and fold the thing until the addressee's name appeared in the window and then, having seen it wasn't me, gone and shoved it back into a post box. He would then have been fined £100 for being late with his tax return, but no matter, I wouldn't have broken the law.

I'll go down the cop shop as soon as I've had my breakfast and turn myself in. Unless, of course, they come and break my door down in the meantime.
