job offer - can't afford to start though!

Ok, so I have been looking for a job for a while as I have been a stay at home mum for 2 years now and we've recently been having to put things on credit card.

I have found a job and got an offer, if the ID etc goes through I could be starting on 1st Feb, but I doubt it as it's the 20th now!

I have 2 sons, aged 7 and 22 months. We have found a nursery for my youngest for 3 full days a week costing £40 a day. I will be working f/t but my dh gets 2 weekdays off each week so he can have him those days.
My eldest won't need childcare.

I have rang tax credits and because my income was only £2500 for 09/10 they are saying we will be entitled to 80% of childcare, which is brilliant.
I'm guessing that this will only last a year though because if I start work soon my income for 10/11 will be much higher?

Anyway, the nurery want £100 deposit (which we don't have) payable off the 1st months fees. My question is if i start the job on 1/2/10 and ds starts nursery that day what day will tax credits pay me the childcare money because I simply don't have the nursery fees to pay from my own pocket, not until I'm paid anyway which will be a month after I start.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense I am struggling to word what I mean!!
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

would love to win something 'proper'!!

Its usually a few weeks after the nursery start date you will get paid. You can only update a change of circumstance after it has happened. So the day you start work and your child goes into nursery you call them up and tell them all the details.

Could you try sorting something out with the nursey ? I am sure they would rather have your child there and be getting paid even if it may be a bit late this month.
I would explain and all should be fine.

I am sure with child care you can advise them of the start date in advance. I am pretty sure i have done this in the past, I have always had the fees before they started nursery. I cant say 100% if this is right but i am pretty sure.

  • You will not be able to add your childcare details and employment details until the day you actually start work. There is no timescale on how long it takes to process a change so the tax credit helpline will not be able to give you a definite date of when you would start receiving help with the childcare. However generally when you make a change and if you call back a good few days later they might be able to advise you of your new payment schedule.
