Oil usage - how long do you get out of 500L?

you've got a leak, the burner needs checking or someone is stealing it.
for a 4 bed, 2 rec detached with conservatory and build on garage I would say 1500 ltrs should do you a year.
We've that and we're going through approx 3 fills a year @ 800 litres or so a fill.
The house is only five years old with individual controls for upstairs and downstairs.0 -

500L in Jan/Feb then top it up in July with another 1000L (or fill to the top)
Heating is on twice a day (6.30-8am) and 3pm-5pm. Then if need be a boost at night.

Just remember that although you use 1500l/year you do NOT use 1500/12 l per month. You will use most of it in December/January and I checked ours the other day we used half a tank from 3rd January to now, but we only have two fills per year .... think about it.
Oh and ours has been on 24/7 since the beginning of december @ room temp 19°C boiler temp @65°Cand turned up to 20°C in the evenings as necessary. Doing this our heating comes on for short intervals instead of long sustained "blasts" and costs just a little more per annum ... all tried/tested/costed and monitored with overall stat in hall and individual thermostatic valves on rads.0 -
just thought that i would mention that we have uswed 700 L since middle of january, approx £50 per week and wer just about out..thought it was just us!! is all of the uk the same price oil or is it just us?CHAMPAGNE TASTE.....LEMONADE MONEY
42/70 lbs weight gone forever0 -
Ordered 500lts 2nd of December, live in a 3 bedroom terrace house. Heating has been on all day nearly everyday from 8am -10pm since as I have a newborn baby at home with me all day.
I have my boiler set around 14 -15 degrees C, TRVs all down low, I read somewhere that by having your heating on all day with boiler set low you don't use as much oil because the boiler does not have to work so hard to get the core of the house temperature up. Well I still have oil left in the tank and my home is warm but not roasting.0 -
Can I also suggest loft insulation! We live in a bungalow built about 20 yrs ago which has loft insultation but speaking to our plumber about another matter he suggested we improve it. We laid new loft blankets think 150mm on top of the older yellow insultation and the temperature in our coldest rooms went up by about 3 degrees. It probably cost us £150 or slightly more to do this but house definately feels warmer. We had assumed because we had some insulation that it was ok, but really we did need better insultation. It may help..0

We live in a 3 bed bungalow. Got 500 litres 5th Jan and another 500 on 20th Feb. Heating on 2hrs morning and around 4 hours evening. Sometimes an hour or two in afternoon.
In a really cold spell you can use 100 litres per week as advised by my oil man.
Again depends on usage. On only one to two hrs a day over that cold snap and you would freeze to death : ) - If you have a leak you would likely know about it...........0 -
This really is funny we got 500ltr as well on the 21/12/09 and went to put the heat on the at the beginning of last week for it not to work so after checking the boiler etc went and looked at the tank - the lid was lying on the ground beside the tank, the pin lying at the other side of the tank and all the oil gone. Like yourself I didn't think we would have used that much oil in such a short period of time considering we only put the heat on for an hour or two a day.
Long story short contacted the police and insurance to report it and they agreed it sounded like it had been stolen so we are now claiming of our insurance.
Since we have reported it we have heard of other people in the local area having similar things happening!
So tank now padlocked but little use if someone knows how to drain a tank properly - sooo peeved off !!!0
