Separated from husband - council tax?

I have temporarily separated from my husband. He has gone to live with his parents. I don't know how long this separation will be. I have remained with the children in our home. Can I phone up the council and get the single person's rebate? Do they need any particular proof that my husband has left?

Hi frosty. They should be fine with it and will probably backdate it as well if he's been gone more than a month. I have always been single but when I moved house I forgot to tell them for ages that I shouldn't be paying the full whack and they were fine with it, refunded me the difference etc. You get a form once a year to sign letting them know of your current status - although obviously if he does come back you should let them know straight away so you don't build up arrears and end up with a big bill.0

I would put it in writing and do it nowish. Just because 1 council will backdate, I would not assume they all will.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I had to get a letter from a solicitor to say we had separated, I got my ex to pay for it as he was the one wanting a divorce, think it cost £25, but I got the single person's discount back dated to the date he moved out.0
