Peugeot 406 starter motor isuue - Any mechanical minds reading?

Sometimes when going to start my car, the starter motor just whirrs but doesn't engage. normally after 2 or 3 attempts it works, or sometimes first time. it does seem to be getting worse though!
does anyone know how if i get stuck, i could force it to engage. also, roughly how much it would cost to be fixed (and what is the cheapest way?).

Not overly familiar with the 406 but sounds to me rather like the motor is sticking or the spring/bendix has gone (which is new starter motor time)

If it misbehaves give it a whack with a rubber mallet and that may help. Some starter motors also have a lug on the back which you can twist (they then release) and away you go.

Last time mine stuck it was because I'd filled it full of mud, cleaned and greased it and away it went again. If not it's time for a re-con starter.
