Letter re tax code?

I got a letter today from HMRC for 2010-2011 Tax Code.
They said it is going to be 647l, which it currently is, just wondering why I have been sent out a letter when I have been with my employer 7 years?
Anyone else get one?:o

yes I got one saying I would be on Basic Rate which is 20 % tax ! And I should tell my employer !
Funny that as I was made redundant last March and havent worked since and they were aware of that0 -
My accountant told me they post out those kinds of letters like confetti and not to worry about them. You can ring them just to check anywayMinds are like parachutes - they only function when open.

they have to issue you with one each year. They also issue your employer with one but they just tell them the code number and not the breakdown like the one you get as that's private info.
the tax code represents your tax free personal allowance each year. its good practice to ensure you are happy with it and that it is correct.
647l mean you can earn £6475 and then pay tax on any earning over that amount in the tax year.0 -
