Disabled = suddenly lost all sense of aesthetics

and after 30 odd posts the real reason for this problem comes out,
"I have always argued that a full specification for works should be passed to the tenant for agreement and signature, I'm going to carry on pursuing this idea, as I did not receive a specification for the works carried out."
and this is the greatest cause of customer dissatisfaction that i know of, easily cured by that old fasioned thing...COMMUNICATION, its the key to almost everything and if you can get the HA to agree to this life should be so much better for everyone.
Putting my lateral thinking head on, you are having difficulty getting a chair down the steps. You state you only need it now and again, have you thought or considered a folding shooting chair of stick. I know how unwieldy chairs can be and you may find these easier to manage. At times any combination of my spelling, grammar or punctuation may be incorrect. Please do not pick me up for this as, after all, it is only an internet forum.0 -
I think 30 posts have been necessary because I posted originally in the wrong forum and attracted the attention of the wrong people before my post was transferred to this board; and so a lot of unhelpful discussion took place. However it got the distressing experience out of my system and fired up my spirit and so it has done me a lot of good.
Shooting sticks don't go down very well in supermarkets, which is often the place I need a wheelchair most; you will find that many MS people have a part time need for a wheelchair once your legs have gone, that's it, I only have to lift this down 4 steps then its folded up in the hallway.0 -
Having seen the problems in getting permission for handrails and ramps on a building that my charity uses I can only say that there may have been no choice other than that fitted.
No allowance can be made for aesthetics at all, all that matters is health and safety and that rather means metal solid rails is all you are going to get to comply. No other material is hard wearing and safe, however you might want to ask for permission to maybe spray the metal another colour, car shops like Halfords sell some nice metal spray paints for around £8 and you could maybe spray them green to look a little better.
I think that there are provisions in the DDA that actually disagree with what you have said; it says that design should be inclusive, and elegant, make able bodied people want to use this facility; in fact not to involve a disabled person in the humiliating situation that having to accept substandard goods or services would involve. It is public liability insurance cost that draws the corporate attention and causes companies to dispense with the more sophisticated design requirements of the DDA.
I think this is covered when a company is audited for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act.0 -
I think if you are still considering the plastic paint, in my experience it is not very economical at all and to have all that painted you would need to buy an awful lot of it. Just metal paint would be best for the posts but the rail I do agree they are freezing cold in winter and hot in summer and this needs some covering. Pipe lagging sponge is ok covered with black carpet tape if you don't mind that as it is very adhesive, as long as its more comfortable to use is the most important thing. Aluminium is best because its going to be safe and strong that is the councils main concern.
Or I guess if you know anyone really handy it might be possible to drill holes along the top of the rail and bolt on a wooden top to it somehowThanx

I think that is a brilliant idea!! There's a nice green shade of hammerite, and I can ask a friend to make a wooden bit to bolt on to the handrail. THANK YOU for the idea.0

hrafndot i think i need to borrow you.
I was diagnosed with fibro last year, my neurologist did not like the diagnosis but he could see it was a relief for me to have a name to what was causing me all this pain, fatigue etc etc, but almost a year on and several more mri's and spinal taps, they now feel that that i have ms, with or in place of fibro i don't know, i have 2 months before i see the neurologist again. I too have suffered for a good 6 years or more now. That i can live with as the usual saying we can't give you a diagnosis based on one test, etc.
I need to move, i live in a maisonette in a block of flats, i have an electric wheelchair that i cannot use, because i have a door step, and no ramp, and i will not be allowed a ramp either because i am on a communal walkway.
my ot said ohhh but you can have one that can be moved, yes i said by whom...oh your son she said, my answer was yes great but your not actually helping me with my independence are you, i am still going to be stuck at home, housebound until 4pm when ds is home from school.... i need independence during the daytime.i've waited 7 months for her to tell me something that although helpful, quite useless for me and all i want is to regain some independence during the daytime when i am on my own.. i need the wheelchair as i end up a wreck outside without it..
So i am stuck here until i can move using home choice, only just appealed to go from band 5 to band 4. So looks like i am stuck here for a long time with no help.0 -
Mupette, stupid question I know, but have you asked the other residents in your block if they would mind you having a ramp installed? If you suggested to them that the ramp was a moveable one so that if/when you move it can go with you, they may be happy for you to put the ramp in place and simply leave it down all the time. If they know they can move it out the way if necessary and then put it back, I'm sure they should be happy.....In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0

Aren't they assuming that ds is physically capable of moving the ramp?Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

But isn't she saying her son isn't there to move the ramp during the day, so she won't be able to go out anyway."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -

After all, it doesn't help mupette if her son does his back in shifting the ramp, does it!But isn't she saying her son isn't there to move the ramp during the day, so she won't be able to go out anyway.
It's possible a ramp would lead to 'trip' dangers, if it's not contoured at the sides, but I've seen contoured on all sides ramps in some places, definitely worth pursuing a bit further, especially if the neighbours say they don't mind.Signature removed for peace of mind0
