Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone could help me please.....I have one day left of my current mcafee protection for my laptop ( I don't have another computer) and I don't know what to do next. I am really new to computers and my ex set this one up, all I know is it keeps telling me how long i have left till it expires. I am on benefits so could do with the cheapest but best deal around.
Does anyone have any experience of this and if possible point me in the right direction? I use my computer mainly for emails, internet, not much in the way of downloads and i am about to start an Open University online course.
Many thanks,
Louise

I would recommend one of the free alternatives instead of McAfee. Microsoft Security Essentials would be top of the list in your case. It is very easy to install and you don't have to configure much (if anything).
Here's instructions on how to uninstall McAfee - http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
You can download Microsoft Security Essentials here. It also has a video on how to install. You need to uninstall McAfee first - http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS1005070 -
1. uninstall Mcafee
2. use the mcafee removal tool to make sure its completly gone
3. choose one of the reputabl efree anti virus products available and install that (eg Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials etc etc)
PS you might want to make sure you are up to date with security patches first and downloading the install files for 3 before doing step 1 and 2 will make sure you're protected throughout
PPS Mcafee is near useless in any event0 -

Agreed, McAfee isn't very good anyway.0 -
Hi Louise
I would stop using Mcafee and either use Avira, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials.
You can download them from here....

have they fixed their update server issues yet? good product but an antivirus with out of date definition files isn't much use at all
Yes, it has been fixed.
Been using Avira free for a number of years now, okay there may be the odd problem occasionally mainly due to the servers being overwhelmed for the free AV but for a free, no nonsense AV that does the job I've never had many complaints about it.0 -
Thanks everyone!! Just about to dump mcafee and install microsoft-you have saved my day!!!!!!!!
