Working Tax Credits

Here's a straight forwards question
Do WTC's depend on earnings or savings or a combination of both ?
If savings - what are the rules ?

Not on savings just on income. If single you must be working more than 30 hours per week but not earning more than 17k per year. If a couple with children you must be working more than 16 hours per week and same income applies

I am on ESA at the moment - but considering a low paid job
What about my wife - she earns about £6k pa (part time - 20 hours)
Is she eligible in her own right ?

If you are going to be working you will have to make a tax credits joint claim. She wont be eligable on her own though as she must be working 30 hours plus per week

    Isn't that slightly SEXIST ?
Why am I allowed to claim in my own right - but my wife is not ?
Unless I am missing something ?

She isnt eligable because she dosnt work enough hours, not because shes a woman.

You didnt say in your first post you had a partner who was working. And you arent allowed to claim on your own it must be a joint claim
If you are parents and get child tax credit you can claim if you work 16 hours plus or more.
If you dont have children you must work 30 hours plus or more. But if you are a couple you must still work 30 hours or more but both of you must be on the claim and the income must not exceed 17k per year or you will not qualify

if your wife is disabled or you have children under 20 in full-time non advanced education, she'll only have to work 16 hours.

I understand that there is also an overriding rule
If the claimee has savings that raise more than £2000 pa in interest - no WTC is payable - what interest rate do DWP assume ?
    Probably 10% ?
