simply remove the frame stops.
(you can place them on the other/upper side of the trap door if required).

For about £70 you can ger a complete spring loaded wooden ladder with hatch that is the same width as the joists (worth measuring first). Simple to fit you just need a hand getting it up there, load from the top onto a couple (OK 4) of 2x1 blocks screwed to the underside of the joist, hanging over.
There seems to be a general 'Cheap as Chips' theme on this forum, but some things are just better if you spend a bit more. A £30 one will not be so good I think Ormus0 -

where do you get those prices from? Most , if not all the wooden ladders costs at least £90:o0
