our Amstrad HD sky box started to freeze over weekend so to fix it turned box off etc to reset AND took out the viewing card, noticed the chip is burnt??? looks like a cigarette burn on the other side? also felt very hot to touch phoned sky to see if still safe? was told the box is designed to switch off if it over heats  but engineer coming tomorrow, check your viewing cards as I know already of 2 other people with same problem, will update but would be keen to know if this is a problem overall, the box is about 6 months old so thankfully still under warranty!

I am glad to know I am not alone - but SKY fobbed me off to purchase a new HD Box (Nice one!)
I consider this a FIRE risk which needs to be investigated - as Sky Alone knows how many households have these damned Boxes and Viewingcards!!?
I will just say that if my Box or Viewingcard EVER catches aflame - STAND BY SKY!
If anyone is hurt as a result of FAULTY equipment in my household or if my neighbours suffer as a consequence Sky will be sucked dry by Legaland Public Record issues.

What?
Am I missing something?
Why is it a fire hazard to start with?0 -

This is actually quite normal, you put some current through a chip and it heats up and discolours the back of the card. it wasn't noticeable on the old style blue cards as much because of their colour but on the newer grey cards it's much more noticeable. I used to work for the company that programmed and dispatched the smart cards and it was quite common to see cards returned to us like this.
If your chip and pin bank cards were plugged in 24 hours a day they would feature the same discolouration on them. It's not a fire risk and not something to be concerned about. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
- another crap designed box with the PSU on the right hand side, but the cooling fans on the left
- they only respond to one question : Does it still work Y/N

I have a faulty hd box which will not allow any signal. I spend £94 a month with Sky for viewing only due multi room but all they can offer me is a new box for £149 or take out insurance for £9 per month. Surely there is something else they can do for their customers who spend this every month for 7 years? They are quick to ring me to offer me broadband but not to fix my HD box, can anyone help?0
