Autolok Gear stick/Hand brake Locks

Anyone use one of those locks that you hook around the gear stick and slot over the hand brake? Are they really any good and are they a deterrent to would-be thieves?

I got one off eBay cheap a few months ago and have been using it on my car at night as I have to leave it parked on the side street. I also use it while I'm at work all day in the public car park. I don't bother putting it on when I go shopping or visiting family etc.

  • If your car has an immobiliser, and isn't worth the hassle of lifting onto a low loader to be stolen on demand, it will be a pointless purchase.

If using it you need to push the gear stick forward...quite forcibly before locking the autolok into position.

If you don't then any would be thief will push the gearstick forward enough to slide the cover off the handbrake.

most of them are a waste of time. If they need your car they can break into it or even saw through the gear stick.

If you value your car then go for autolok 2000 or disklok which not only fit onto your steering wheel and is difficult to remove it also protects your airbag from being stolen.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D
  • I have to put it into first gear to get it on and lock it. It's a Pug 206 with immobiliser and alarm. I just think it gives that little extra visual deterrent to passing by scrotes looking for a joy-ride I suppose.

Will look into the autolok disklok. :)

What it actually tells the theives is "this guy thinks he knows about security but there's unlikely to be anything else there...."

They ARE very easy to defeat too, so hardly worth bothering with imho.

  • Even if used on the brake pedal, the locking pin can be easily broken by simply kicking the pedal. I had one on a Mk.1 Escort (which shows how long ago this was!) and it didn't stop it being stolen.

  • it must be a 206 thing.
my girlfriend has a 206 and one of those really annoying steering lock things. she even puts it on if she is just popping out of the car for 2 minutes, it takes her longer to put it on and then take it off again than it does to just go and do whatever she is doing.

i don't think it serves as much of a deterant to be honest,if they want her car bad enough they will get it even if they need to resort to mugging her for the keys.
