Info on selling shares?

We have 366 shares which we received when the Halifax demutualised. Here's the really embarrassing bit...... :-[
We have the certificate which was sent to us. It has been in a forgotten file *cringe*as we know nothing about shares. I know it's not an earth-shattering amount but the thing is we don't even know where they are. ::) I assume that HBOS have them in their possession and, as we're thinking of selling them, where do we start?
What's the procedure and any ideas how much we'd get for them at present? Any and all (comprehensive and comprehensible!) advice welcome. :-/

Hi, there, weatherwax ( fellow Pratchett fan ? )
If you want to sell your shares you'll need the certificate. You'll have to contact the registrars, who will issue a replacement certificate upon payment of ( last time I looked ) £25 and signing of a letter of indemnity.
The registrars for HBOS are Computershare; here are their contact details -

Once you have the certificate, you can open an account with an online broker, send them the certificate, wait for it to be " de-materialised " ( nothing Trekky, just the process of registering them to a nominee account ) then give a sell instruction. You can also deal through Halifax' own sharedealing service -

Your holding, at yesterday's average mid-price, is worth roughly £3000.

Apologies for the multiple posts. Hit the back button, got the internal server error, and don't know how to delete a post. Sorry :-[0 -
Isn't having the certificate the same thing as having the shares?
(I'm really dim with things like this too - that's why it caught my eye), but the piece of paper they sent out confused me too. When I asked the other half what this 'piece of paper' was - he just said "your shares".
I expected a number of 'pieces of paper' for some reason.
Should I get my coat? ;D0 -
Hi, Sofa :-)
You're right - the certificate is your proof of ownership of x number of shares. I guess I had assumed that the OP had lost the certificate but on re-reading the post I see that your interpretation is the correct one.

Thanks Cheerfulcat- could be a first for me ;D
I only hit on the idea because I think, like the OP maybe did, that I'd have 366 pieces of 'paper money' type thing.0 -
Hi, cheerfulcat, and many thanks for the excellent advice.
