Thinking of switching but not sure how!

Hi all,

Apologies for my dimness but I'm a bit new to all this switching business, I've been with Npower for 2 and 1/2 years now and currently pay a whopping £155 per month for dual fuel - I know that we can get it cheaper elsewhere but my issue is that due to a mistake Npower made we owed £247 on our last bill, hence why our DD is so high. I would be happy to pay any amount owed once we'd switched but wasn't sure if we're allowed to switch and if so how I go about it??? Do I sign up with the new company and then tell Npower or am I obligated to inform Npower first? Will other companies allow me to sign up if Npower says I owe them money?? The last time I sorted anything like this out was when we first moved into our house and Npower dealt with telling the other company etc and there was no outstanding balance.

Any help would ne appreciated, sorry for the long post.

The losing company(Npower in your case) can block a switch if the customer owes money - and they usually do.

£247 is not a big debit balance though.

The procedure is for you to contact the company you wish to move to and they will tell NPower - but as stated above, Npower might stop the switch.
  • Thanks Cardew, I thought as much. Would I be better speaking to Npower and trying to get an up to date balance from them? I've just posted online meter readings so that might make it a bit easier?

Yes contact them and pay enough to be all square on the account.

They won't block the switch fo small amounts - most people will have to pay something to the old company after a switch.
