Cheap ferry tickets ? (not Dover - Calais)

Hi all, does anyone have any tips for cheap ferry tickets between the south west of England (Plymouth, Portsmouth, Poole etc) and France ?
Looking to book a ferry for a week's holiday in France early September and the cheapest quote is a whopping £338 return on Brittany Ferries !

We could taken easyjet for half that and hire a car but would prefer to take our own car, and starting from Bristol going to west coast of France so would prefer not to go Dover - Calais as it will add 300 - 400 miles to our journey.

Any tips for reducing this fare gratefully received !
