Holiday entitlement for ethnic minority employees.

Hi

A new colleague, who is a Hindu, informed me yesterday that it is a fact that ethnic minority workers (such as herself) are legally entitled to take 3 extra days holiday (paid holiday) in addition to their normal annual leave entitlement, to celebrate holy days.

I have honestly not heard this before, and would presume that if it is true, it would apply to all religions.

Is this true? Can anybody in HR tell me the position please.

Thank you

W

This was my first thought!! However, when I questioned her on this and told her I had not heard this before, she was adamant and informed me that she knew this for a FACT!!

I thought it best to keep my disbelief to myself until I found out for sure!! It may be that she is trying to pull a fast one as she is the boss's wife!!;)

    Thanks

    She's talking !!!!

At best they may find that they get first dibs on certain holiday dates for religous reasons.

There is certainly no law or entitlement to additional days, and , any granting of such would be discrimination!

The only explaination I could see would be some dippit HR person who misinterpreted the law and in turn gave every other employee a case for discrimination.

Thank you. She is obviously trying it on, she said it with such conviction though!! It would open a whole can of worms if I had fallen for that one, the other staff would lynch me!!

Basically, she expects to be treated differently to everybody else, even down to wanting 6 weeks paid sick leave for an op that was planned, when she had been working with us for less than a year, and when our staff handbook (which she has a copy of), clearly says that only 2 weeks full pay is paid for sickness during the first year. (didn't happen!).

Do you work in HR by any chance, and if you do, would you mind if I PM you as I have another query along these lines, but if I write it on the forum, you never know who is looking in:eek:

    Thank you

Your employer is obviously sensitive to the cultural and religious beliefs of it's employees. ;)

What didn't happen? she didn't get paid weeks or did the company fold, also it may not be discriminatory if they set a precedant fairly recently before

A good way to wind up the natives. I think the only way this would work is if the christians get good friday, easter monday and xmas while the hindus work those days, but get 3 of their own choosing.

You can in many workplaces take your 'public holidays' on days other than bank holidays etc and I think that religious followers have a case for being able to take certain holy days, as an earlier poster said I think Christians can take Easter holidays and even Sundays etc but definately not entitled to more in sum, total
