    To tell you the truth, he really wanted to give her the 6 weeks and started questioning the wording of the handbook (which was fine when it applied to the rest of us!!) and I had to kick up a right fuss to convince him that he couldn't do this for one, when he would not have allowed it for another. He would have had a mutiny on his hands if he had got his way!!

    I found that amusing too!

    Could you imagine Annihalter in HR, his back to work after sickness interviews would be funny. Perhaps a job negoiating with the Stewards Union on behalf of BA would be an appropriate job.

    Maybe what she was trying to get at was that Employers are supposed to oblige with certain Religious Holidays (for example, not refusing paid/unpaid leave for Religious Holidays?).

    There is certainly no law or entitlement to additional days, and , any granting of such would be discrimination!

    The only explaination I could see would be some dippit HR person who misinterpreted the law and in turn gave every other employee a case for discrimination.


    You would think that it would discriminate against all the other employees, but is it really different to large (and small ones for all I know) law firms, where Jewish people leave early on a Friday, to make sure they get home before sunset?

    But if there is a good business reason why the Jewish person may not leave work early on a Friday, then they have no right to this.
    This applies to anyone of any faith and none - a toyshop, for instance may bar all employees from taking leave during December as this would be a busy time of year.

    Some firms have policies that accommodate religious holidays/festivals, but generally time has to be made up elsewhere, although that is up to the employer eg staff at law firms might be required to get in early on Fridays, or they may already do in excess of their contracted hours in any event.

    As for legal entitlement every full time employee is entitled to a minimum of 28 days paid holiday (based on a five day working week) as set out in the Working Time (Amendment) Regulations 2009. There is no right for anyone any longer to automatically receive bank or public holidays or religious holidays. It would be discriminatory within the meaning of the Race Relations legislation to allow one particular group special privileges, such as the OP’s colleague alleges, based upon their race or religion.
