Windows explorer keeps freezing and Not Responding

Options
Hi, When I open windows explorer and open three or four tabs or pages, the program then freezes and goes to the Not Responding mode which means I then have to restart explorer and start again. Sometimes this can be ten minutes or so after starting, other times it is an hour, but usually when I have three or four open pages

I have scanned, virus checked and malware checked and everything seems in order.

I am running windows 7 home premium, which I recently upgraded to from Vista home premium but the problem used to happen on Vista and hasnt changed with the new O/S

If we're talking Internet Explorer 8 then yes, it does that to me all the time. At least it used to, I fixed it by switching to Opera.

Open up the Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC), select the Processes tab and see if any extra processes start up when you open IE.

I had a similar issue when I was on Vista. There was a process called ssvagent.exe that was maxing out my processor when opening IE or new tabs in IE. It's a Java update agent and can be removed by uninstalling Java 6 Update 7.

What software have you used for the virus scans?

It may also be worth installing ccleaner and performing a cleanup.

The problem the OP is describing (and which I too have experienced often) is quite different to that. To start with, launching IE and opening tabs is fine. Then, after an unpredictable period of time, it progressively falls apart: first one tab seizes up, then another, then right-click stops working, and so forth until the whole thing grinds to a halt. It's happened to him under Vista and Windows 7. It happens to me under XP. Classic memory leak in my opinion.
