Car advice needed

A friend of mine bought a vauxhall meriva from a main dealer back in sept.
A few months down the line (december) they had some serious money worries and decided to downgrade to an older car.

So we struck a deal and all was good until today.

The EPS light (power steering) came on and the steering went really heavy.
My wife pulled over and turned the car off. Restarted it and the fault cleared, but came back on as soon as she pulled off.

Now where would i stand with taking the car back to the dealer seeing as it wasn't me that originally bought the car. The dealer sold it only 4 months ago. A few weeks after buying the car the gear linkage went and my friend had them replace it. since then its been fine. Before buying it i actually rang the dealer to ask about the work they had done and they said it was A1, and that the part had been replaced and was now as good as new.

There is no extended warrenty on the car as my friend didn't take it out  so the 3 month that came with the car ran out december.

I will give them a ring tomorrow, but don't want to be fobbed off.
so im just looking for a bit of advice.

thanks in advance :T

You have no rights against the dealer at all. Any attempt by your friend to do it would be fraudulent and if caught could prompt both criminal and civil proceedings against them and you.

Thats what i thought, but hoped you wouldn't say lol.

Before i paid a mechanic to look at the car i wanted to make sure i couldn't get it done for free by the dealer lol. I wouldn't get my friend to do it, anyway they know he sold it to me as i had quite a lengthy conversation with their mechanic about the car.

I hope this isn't going to be expensive
  • Gear linkage on them is pretty common.

The reason the steering fault resets its self after switching off is the steering on them is an electric pump. Probably something simple.

I really hope so but after reading quite a few horror stories about meriva power steering faults its not sounding good.

    thanks for the replies :)
  • You have dipped the power steering fluid reservoir, haven't you?
