I love bangernomics and have just bought a 2001 Fiat Punto 1.9TD ELX 3 door in silver metallic. 144k on the clock, full history, everything working (needed a stereo though £10 from ebay)........£700. Its averaging 55-60MPG (60 mile round trip to work, Newark On Trent to Beeston, Nottingham) every day. MARVELLOUS!

Bin her and get your life back ;)
  • You have got to love your cars, cars are always money well spent. The new golf GTI is a lovely car, look in on that!:)
  • From what I'm looking at, the volvos and any of the non turbo diesels have some silly milages on so I'd be tempted by them as they're obviously up for the job. That Fiat's tempting too. Am I guessing correctly that the non turbo diesels are more reliable because of the lower compression? So I assume they don't do head gaskets as much?

I'm also tempted by the citroen xsaras because of the size. I know the engines either the 1.9 turbo or the 2 hdi (which I guess is the early common rail) and against the advice above but does anyone have any idea about these?

Off to BCA next week in Walsall to have a look. :)

I'm getting really excited about this now!

Quick update, had a two people come round to look at the M12 today, one was chuffed and offered the asking price straight away! That means over two years, it's only depreciated £2500. I know it's alot of money but I've got mates with corsas that have depreciated more than that. I will admit it cost 18 squillion in tyres though! I can't believe it's really going! The guy even took the mileage and said he would only offer the asking price if the mileage doesn't go up so no fairwell drive either!

I've discussed getting rid of the girlfriend and keeping the cars but she told me off and pointed out that i'm boxing above my weight with her and I'd only end up with a munter if I got rid. I can see her point. I'm fairly sure this is domestic violence.

Thanks for the advice guys, keep it comming!

Cheers, but I'm not sure you're getting the full picture! See post 1!

Thanks for the input though and welcome!

Peugeot 205 or 405 diesel, non turbo.

Don't dismiss the turbo either. My estate ran to 234k before it went for scrappage. They are comfortable, handle reasonably, have great visibility and can carry huge loads. I regularly got 55-60 mpg as well.
  • Brilliant Top Gearesque challenge! Make sure to take a picture and put it up here so we can see what you bought! :D

There a 3 Skoda Fabia's under £1000 on autotrader, 1.4 petrol 8v, surprisingly comfortable and refined car on the motor way. They are all under 80,000 miles too and these cars rarely go wrong.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
