Brand New Acer Laptop has died!

Options
Please could one of you kind Techies help. My daughter got a new Acer Aspire laptop for Christmas - model is 5810T with Windows Vista operating system.

I think she may have left it on over the weekend and the battery may have gone flat. We cannot get it to switch on at all now. Think it must've gone into hibernation as screen is black and no other sign off life, except that there was an orange light on at the front of the computer, which changed to blue after a couple of hours charging (now light has gone out altogether). We cannot bring it back to life at all.

Things I've tried: Keeping finger on power button for up to 1 min at a time to see if it comes on, taken the battery pack off, unplugged it from mains, and tried pressing lots of keys ie ALT CTRL DEL and Fn F4 etc, but cannot raise it from the dead. Does anyone know what else we could try?

Many thanks for any help.

Before I/we suggest...is the warranty still valid? It should be! With a problem as serious as this, I'd take it back and allow Acer to fix - cost-free. IMHO ;)

It's busted, take it back. Draining the battery flat cannot cause this. It might simply be the power supply unit, of course, but take it back anyway.

I was thinking that maybe it went into hibernation type mode as she'd left it on before the battery drained so perhaps it is still hibernating. There was a light on when we tried to switch it on last night before re-charging it, but the light was orange which suggested to me that it had run out of battery, after it turned blue, but we still couldn't get the computer out of the hibernation mode.... does that sound right?

Thanks so much for replies so far. I was thinking of just taking it back but as it it has quite a lot of stuff on it - all her recent homework etc. do you think they will recover this or will they just give us a new computer and we've lost all the stuff she has?

    Many thanks again.
  • She shouldn't lose anything, since it's doubtful this problem is connected to the hard drive in any way. Once the laptop has been repaired, it should be exactly as it was before it died. In a worst case - if they exchange the machine - the original disk can be transferred to it so again there should be no loss of data.

When you do get it back, hopefully with the data intact, teach her how to back up, and on a regular basis.

what happens if you hold the power button down for 10sec or so?
  • Sounds like the power supply to me.

Before taking it back, have you tried changing the fuse?

Did you try powering it up on the mains, with battery removed at the same time?

Hi again all, and thanks for your help so far. Macman - I don't even KNOW how to back up!!! Don't shout at me, please!

The power supply seemed to be working last night when, after not having touched the computer over the weekend, we put the mains cable in and the orange light, just below the mousepad, kind of on the front edge of the computer came on once it was connected to the mains. After a couple of hours of charging the light turned blue (indicating fully charged) BUT we could not get the power switch to work to get the computer to switch on. I held the power switch down for quite a while (several times) to try to get the computer to switch on, then pressed all variations of keys, in case it was in some kind of hibernation mode, and needed to be triggered out of that mode, but to no avail. Power is definitely getting through, as when I put the power lead in again just now, the orange light is showing on the front, but the computer won't switch on.

Closed: If I take the battery out the orange light goes out, so I don't think computer can be used without the battery inserted, even when on the mains.

    Cheers
