Help! Selling My Car - How/Where etc.?

Hi everyone!

I know nothing about buying/sellings cars etc. so am looking for a bit of help with this.

Basically, I need to sell it off ASAP to repay the money I borrowed from my Mum to buy it (£440.00 left to pay). I'd preferably like to sell it before the MOT/Tax is due in March. I've tried asking my family/friends for help on how to sell it as I don't have a clue but nobody can be bothered helping me! To make matters worse, I only have a provisional license so I can't take it and drop it off anywhere!

Okay, it's a Y (2001) registration Peugeot 106 Independence 1.1. It has about 57,000 miles on the clock. It is due MOT/road tax in March. It was previously a Cat C write off but was repaired before I bought it although it still has some faint marks left from where it was repaired. It also has a large crack on the plastic front bumper (where the number plate is attached). Inside, it is in immaculate condition. My boyfriend also had part of the exhaust replaced in September 09 (think it is called the "backbox"). I have a full service history and it has had two previous owners before me. It had four new tyres about 2500 miles ago.

Can someone help? webuyanycar.com have offered me £390.00 and I could get someone to drop it off at their centre for me but I think I might be able to get a bit more for it?

Do car garages buy cars off people or would they only offer exchanges? Would I be better dropping it off at a scrap cars garage for parts etc.? Or would I be better advertising in a local paper for a fixed price for the car as it is?

Thanks for any advice!!!

  • Webuyanycar will offer you around 70% (at best) of the market value but of course, will take it of you with relatively few questions. They sell themselves on saving you the hassle of advertising in the Auto Trader and inviting people to view it (and there's no guarantee you'll get what you want for it even then).

Aside from sticking it in the Auto Trader (which might be tough if it's on the VCAR), running it through a motor auction might be an answer. You obviously won't be able to control what you get for it and the auction house will take a cut of the sale, but smaller cars especially tend attract a lot of demand at auctions.

  • Pistonheads or more likely ebay auction for that type of car
  • Try your local Gumtree. Ads are free, and if you set the price attractively, you should get someone round pretty quickly to pick it up for cash.

Do not accept PayPal or whatever and insist on Cash (i.e. no cheques) to ensure a quick and smooth transaction. Try and have at least 1 person with you at all times if someone wants to come and view it, and try and avoid letting them drive it.

and try and avoid letting them drive it.

This is poor advice; nothing will put a buyer off more than a seller that is reluctant to let them have a test drive.
  • i wouldn't be able to buy a car without test driving it first
    :D
  • Thanks everyone.

I'm based in a little place in the southwest of Scotland so not the easiest place to sell a car from. My dad is taking it to a "car person" at the weekend so if I don't get rid of it then I'll try Gumtree and one of the free ads in my local paper.
