Small bedroom with lost space because of stairwell.

The smallest bedroom has an area of unusable floor because of the slant from the stairs. It used to be have a ceiling height cupboard built over it, but we knocked it out because it made the room look so small.

We then had the slanted bit just boxed off but when the joiner did it, he made the boxing so big that he cut into the room even more and we could no longer even get a single bed in as it was 4" too long.

The room is getting redone now and we've got rid off the boxing in so we're back to the slant. Before we box it in again (but a bit smaller this time) we wondered if anyone had any good ideas to make better use of this area? The only thing we can come up with is to box it in and custom build a bed base off it. As it's right beside the doorway, I'm not sure if that's very safe or practical.

I tried to Google for ideas but I don't even know if this slanted bit has a proper name and my search terms must be rubbish as all i'm getting is ideas for slanted ceilings.

Someone suggested instead of boxing it off squarely, we should build 2 or 3 steps over the slant with bookshelves over the top step if that makes sense? Not sure about the steps but I like quirky ideas.

    I like that idea!

We've got the same thing in my daughters bedroom. We knocked the cupboard out and boxed it in. She's just two and we've had the nappy changing mat on the boxed in bit with the nappy changing stuff on a small shelf above.

Once she's out of nappies, we'll want to use it for some sort of storage but I'm not sure how yet.
Here I go again on my own....
  • What we do a lot for people with rooms like this is build a bedframe over it. The only downside is the bed is then fixed to the one position but a lot of them we have done the people are very happy with it.

I had that in my room when I was growing up. It was boxed off, and my dad cut a door in the side so we could access it for storage. We put my chest of drawers on top, although I did have to stand on the bed to reach the top drawer!
