Made credit card payment early and now being penalised??

They can take from your account the amount that they notify you of at least 10 days in advance
Yep... but 1) that assumes it goes to plan, and 2) that just leaves me checking things at 10 days notice in addition to checking the content of bills/accounts which I do anyway (as well as checking after the event that it happened, of course).
In the end, they are suited to people who just "don't want to worry about missing a payment".... which is fine as far as it goes. The problem is that the next step is never to get around to checking your statements at all - so you have no idea about your finances and what things are really costing you. Plus, you don't spot fraud, wrong interest rates being applied etc.
Fine if you're doing D/D and you're still doing all the checking.0 -

Nah, there's daylight between these two positions, you're in danger of taking your argument into fantasy land.
Ensuring you have a DD in place fundementally shifts responsibility to the card provider to collect the payment on time. Your only responsibility is to have sufficient cleared funds in your account on the DD date.
Checking your statement either online or when it drops through the door to see what new transactions have appeared on it is completely unconnected to whether you pay it by direct debit or not. How can you put forward an argument one leads to the other?
I'd say I'm fairly switched on when it comes to my personal finances, I check my statements every month for anything I don't recognise which is a fairly passive exercise, but don't have to do anything to arrange a payment, infact normally it's when I look at my bank balance that I see a payment has come out. If that suits you, thats fine, but, in jest, I think that to keep banging on about it puts you in the smallest catergory of members on this forum, who are tits!:rotfl:0 -
I opted to have paper free payments and as I always paid £200 monthly I had no reason to check the statements - in hindsight I should have. The annoying part for me is that I did make the payment - it was 2 days early and therefore was credited to the account on the July statement and not the August statement which is why they are saying I have missed a payment. Will know in future, but hoping they will be understanding. I received no email to notify me that payment had not been received for August which I would have thought would have been standard practice. You live and learn!!!
You have every reason to check the statements:
to check that the payment actually got there
to check no-one's put through any fraudulent transactions using your card number
(as well as) spotting situations like the one you are in now much earlier0 -

There's a difference between a helpful tit and a useless tit
But tell you what, I'll stop banging on about it and just refer the people who fall foul of not having a DD in place to you instead

I'm going to hijack this thread lol
Checked my Barclaycard statement yesterday to see that the payment wasn't taken by direct debit so have been charged late payment fee with interest. I can't remember at the mo, must check when I get home, whether it was 10 days ago that i set up the direct debit, but I certainly have received the letter saying it was set up. I naievly believed the screen when I checked my statement the other day, with the giant tick box saying "direct debit set up". Do I have any leg to stand on as to whether i can get this money back as I believed it gave the impression that the payment would be taken by direct debit or is it soley my fault that the I hadn't set the direct debit up weeks before? Advice?0 -
