basic networking gone wrong

right my mate is trying to network his pc and laptop with a router they are all connected to the net , base unite can ping the laptop put the laptop cannot ping base unite , it's set up right in network wizard ,just done with my laptop and base unite worked first time put his is not having it at all ,same setting, his pc and lappy do not have any firewall turn oon ,
can any one tell me what I am doing wrong or missing ,ones xp pro and xp home , i now i am doing some thing wrong put what ,it's basic weave done it hundred of times

Are you pinging the name, or the ip address?
Is this wired or wireless, did yours work wired or wireless?
Which router - probably not relevant, but some have a wireless isolation option.
Is it just ping that doesn't work, or everything (file sharing)?

lapptop is wifi on a BT Voyager 1060 Laptop Adapter and bt voyager 2100 router ,
file sharing ,ifact everthing from lapptop to base unite nothing time outs ,put base unit can see and send thing's to lapptopthere or their,one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -
Does he have zonealarm or some other firewall installed, If so disable it for a minute and try pinging again.0
