Windows wont boot

Options
Win XP prfessional wont start up properly
Login page comes up ok
I have to type Ctrl+Alt+Del then password box comes up
I enter the password and get window saying Applying your personal settings
Then it just hangs there. Even after an hour t hasn,t advanced. Theres lttle acrtivity frm the HDD
Safe mode works ok and I tried various tweaks and cleanups but with no imprvement
Disc Cleanup failed to work though
It has 768Mb Ram
A scan shws thjat t will take a Max f 1gb altogether

Can anyone advise

    you can turn the control+alt+delete off.

    start then run type control userpasswords2 advanced tab then untick "require users to press ctrl+alt+del."

    Do it in safe mode if it wont work in normal.
    Normaly this is turned on automatically when you join a domain.

    Can you do a repair install (an in-place upgrade )?

    I would try a scan for nasties first.
    Boot into safe mode with networking, download MalwareBytes, install, update, quick scan, fix what it finds, and post the log here.

    I would try and go in on the "last known good configuration first" option.

    Agree with Malski - try last known good configuration.

    Back up your data when in safe mode.
