You will feel GUILTY leaving any dog that long 5 times a week!! I hate it when we have to leave ours long hours every now and then, I'm part-time and work many hours opposite my partner.

When ours was a pup I went on nightshifts for a few months because it could really hinder a pup's development being cooped up that long day in, day out...plus she would have DEFINATELY wrecked something if not everything in the house, and a dog shouldn't be crated for that long either. I wanted to be with her a lot, getting her out and about socialising her was so important. It is possible that you could end up with a dog with many problems if it has that kind of start in life.

There is a slight possibility that you might find an older rescue dog that has previously lived alone those hours and is used to it and happpy, a more docile breed? But even this kind of dog needs a decent settling in period where you are around.

as suggested a greyhound would be great (I am biased though;)).
or an Akita (past it's teen years)! a very docile breed that loves to sleep. Oh ok, I'm biased too!
