Pay Self Assessment Bill. HMRC unclear.

Options
I have completed the self assessment tax return and I was presented with the bill online. It said the amount is due before 31st Jan which I knew. I want to make the payment now, but the 'how to pay' guide about paying via bank transfer is unclear....
Please refer to the back of your payment reminder to check which of the Accounts Offices below is relevant for you.

The help page gives two HMRC bank accounts, so it's saying I need to check which account to pay into, but obviously having only just got the instant bill online I don't have a payment reminder.

Will HMRC send a bill in the post in the next few days, with the relevant bank account details on?

Should I jusy pay using the HMRC BillPay service with a debit card? Are there any disadvantages to this other than fee for credit cards?

Many thanks

  • I filed in early October, and my statement arrived in mid December. The account number for direct payments is on the back: I was able to match it with the drop down HMRC list that my online bank showed me. I imagine that they will get your statement out very quickly after you submit.

I just paid mine online using the Direct Debit facility.
You use your UTR as the reference.

Thanks, I should really have found that thread.

Was that the BillPay service, or did you actually setup a DD? I don't need a regular DD as it should only be a one off payment until next year.
  • I have looked at the back of my statement, and Direct Debit is option 1, BillPay is Option 3, so they are different ways to pay.

If you want to try the DD, you need to go online and select Direct Debit Payment from the Main Menu in the Welcome to Online Services page.

It was a DD set up to make a one off payment.

You can pay via the A&L Billpay service ..... that way you only need your UTR (10 numerics + 'K').

Or you can use the 'in-house' HMRC DD service if you're registered for online use ..... and can make a 'one off' payment using that. Overall it's the safest and you can make the payment closer to the SA due date. But you need to allow 5 working days to set up the initial Mandate ..... which you have ample time for :-

Thanks all. I haven't received anything in the post yet. I will probably do the BillPay service as this would be quicker in terms of the money hitting HRMC's bank than DD wouldn't it?

On another note, is it normal that my self assessment bill (Tax + Class4 NIC + small student loan payment) is equal to about 13.5% of my total profit (gross income minus declared expenses)?

Yes ... if you haven't set the DD Mandate up as that takes 5 working days. Billpay should be processed onto the SA system overnight (Mon - Fri).

Can't tell. As it depends what percentage your Personal Allowance takes up?

I just want to thank MSE for the email telling me about the 7day deadline for registering. Serves me right for not reading the back of the letter. Thank you to everyone else for scaring me with the rest of the problems but also providing solutions. I'm partly relieved to be one of the nations poor artists who will probably not owe anything for years.
