northern gas urgent problem

Our old boiler died just before Christmas so had northern gas out to quote on a new one, quoted £1310 for a potterton performa 30kw (B rated) fitted and had a look at the old boiler and stated it a simple straight swap job. They then send out a surveyor to check over the job and make sure everything fits, he cam on friday and spent five miniuted checking and confirmed yep all was fine and booked the job.

Well the engineers have just brought out the boiler to fit and it wont, they cant get it into the location of the old boiler and they can oly suggest fitting a smaller A rated boiler, they also said its more expensive and someone will call me in the next hour to discuss.

As they quoted and surveyed, how do i legally stand on this? do i have to pay extra?

You don't have to pay them at all - they've not done the job, and don't appear to be able to. You can't squeeze a quart into a pint pot.

They appear to have sent out a salesman and then some surveyor, neither of whom will actaully have the job/problem of fitting the boiler.

Get a local, reputable gas safe registered engineer round. He'll be salesman, surveyer, fitter, customer service representative, billing agent and debt collector. And since he'll be doing six jobs for the cost of one, not only will you probably get better service, you'll probably also get a better price :)

What was the terms of the contract the deposit was paid for?

If it was to fit a potterton performa 30kw (B rated), they say they can't do it so you can have the deposit back. It's easy to quote a low price for a job that can't be done.

Next time, don't pay anything up front, especially to a large supplier like Northern Gas.

    Cheers,
I know I can get a refund. What im thinking is they quoted and surveyed for a boiler to be fitted, if they now come back and say £200 more can I say back to them - no you quoted this price and if you surveyed it incorrectly that's your problem?

You can try that as you have nothing to loose. I know someone who got a quote of a few hundred to move an electricity meter and then they tried to bill him for a couple of grand because they didn't survey the job properly. He only paid the amount of the quote, they had to swallow the rest. :rotfl:

they just come back with a 'it will be 2000 rather than the 1300 quoted'

I just said no, you quoted and surveyed 1300, thats your price or I cancel.

He's gone off to speak to a manager.

They should have plenty to play with - the original boiler quoted can be bought for less than £600 inc Vat (plus fitting) ;)

Shouldn't take more than a day to fit, plus about £50 worth of extras (flue, pipe etc)

Tell the to do it for the original price, or send your deposit back, as they have broken the contract, not you.
