Bank Charges - No Notice Received

I have now received 2 charges from the bank - one of which was a result of the previous charge taking me overdrawn.

I have not received any notification of either of these charges - is the bank allowed to take the charge without notifying me?

Have you contacted the bank yet? Have they agreed they have not notified you?

Do you still have statements sent to you? Do you bank online. If so, you may have agreed to paperless statements ie all notifications are online only.

Then probably you should have received a notification from them about the second occassion too.

Perhaps have a word with your local Royal Mail office about the apparent frequent loss of mail to your address. Perhaps they will suggest you collect the mail from them if you have an unsafe delivery address. You may even want to involve the police if the situation is really bad.

    Which bank?
Do you receive paper statements or have you opted for no statements online?

  • A&L charge a payment review fee as soon as they receive a request for payment that will take you over your overdraft limit. They then send a letter out telling you they will charge a fee, which arrives a few days later. I used to work in a bank, and know that you are supposed to receive notice of any penalty fees/ charges (typically 21 days), so cannot understand how this is legal. Any ideas?
  • hi boo.

I am in the same boat as you, in fact I have had quite a few charges taken like this. I have raised it with my bank and they say ' That's because you have a paperless account' - unfortunately for them I have had a 'paperles account' since the start - However, everytime they have charged me in the past, they have still notified me of when the charge was going to get taken out - They still sent me electronic notification, this has now stopped and I am seeking clarification from them as to why. I'll try and keep you posted as to how i'm getting on.

The banking code no longer exists and has been replaced which has resulted in a standardisation of all banks T&Cs. Part of the change which has taken effect is that a minimum of 14 days notice is now required before fees and interest are debited from the account.
I know that both Barclays and Halifax notify customers twice, once when the fee is incurred at the time and then a bill and debiting date is issued on the next statement.
If you are having issues as to not receiving notification, speak to the bank and ask them to clarify how you are notified.
I work for Barclays, however anything I say on this forum is not the official word of Barclays. I am only here to supply relevent information to assist.
