Think if you have invited them all to your party then it would be mean of your work colleagues to expect you to provide lunch also.

Why not buy some packs of weight watchers cakes. Sometimes the pound shops have them. ... bet most of them are on diets and would appreciate the thought.

I love the concept of bringing cakes in on your birthday, it means rather than getting 10 cakes one day a year, you get 1 cake 10 times a year. Genius.

I brought homemade buns in on my birthday and they went down a storm, and cost me about £1.50 to make. I put pretty pink swirls on and brought my cake stand in, even though I say so, they looked fab.

I use the 'easy peasy cupcake' recipe on BBC. Tip: Even though you are using self raising flour, add a teaspoon of baking powder too, it makes them really fluffy. And don't overbeat

And I didn't do it for attention but the attention was nice ;)

Why not make some cakes instead? you could make a big batch of cupcakes enough for everyone to have one or two?

I really liked this suggestion from Josephine. You could even buy cakes and ice / decorate them yourself. I've always thought the thing was a bit of a bloody cheek!

I have never understood this whole its my birthday so i will buy you a cake? It seems topsy turvy to me they should be buying one for you.
I also think that when its someones birthday bringing cakes in is a bit like saying 'Pay attention to me its my Birthday!', which is just not my style. Each to their own though.

I agree - when it was my birthday the first year I worked for my company, and they mentioned me bringing in cakes, I was all "What?! You're meant to buy me stuff!" Luckily I wasn't there then, so didn't have to. I would bring in a small packet of something, but I certainly wouldn't want to buy anything more than a few quid!

I don't mind bringing in cakes at all - but I often (well a few times a year) buy a tray of dunkin doughnuts and bring them in just because... :)
My genius money saving idea for not having to buy them all food is to be off on your 30th on maternity leave - that's what I did... not entirely planned though :rotfl:
The betty crocker cakes are so simple it's silly - definitely worth a try :)
If you are near a Costco and know someone with a membership you can get a MAHOOOOOOOOSIVE cake for £10... all decorated and everything and actually pretty nice too!
OR they now do decorated muffins - problem is they are too big for one person :rotfl:

thankfully the boss is the only person who doesn't like cake!

i'm going to set myself a budget of £10, go to Asda and see what i can find...i always eat other people's stuff so can't really not do anything.

thanks for all the tips...when i get a spare weekend i'm going to teach myself to bake!

    have a good tuesday everyone!

I think this is absolutely fine and its what I used to do at work.

    Have a great birthday!!

  • I agree with the cake suggestion. No one should expect anyone at work of all places to pay for a buffet for everyone.

Make lots of cup cakes, bring them out along with a tin for charity and charge 50p per cake. That'll stop the expensive habit getting out of control and you'll be able to donate to your favourite charity - or feed the birds well!
