Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone can help.
My mum has BT Broadband and Phone, but when I was there at the weekend the Internet was soo slow! I did a speed test and got only 128kbps..... pathetic.
I put my partner on the case and he called BT - they said they would try and up the speed at the exhange, and to wait 24 hrs.
In the meantime i checked the speed on my laptop... still 128kbps. I also checked what mum could be getting on one of those "distance from the exchange" thingys. 6.4mbps was the answer. Mum really doesn't need that - but as she is paying for Broadband, i'd kind of expect her to be getting atleads 1mbps.
I'm wondering on the best way to approach BT regarding this..... and surely Mum is due a refund?? But how can we prove it?
Thanks
LT

Post the line stats in the router
and do a test here http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk
Then post it back.

Could be any of the following
1) dying modem / router (do you have another you could try?)
2) poor quality internal phone wiring (plug modem/router into test socket and reconnect)
3) poor connection to phone socket (check connector properly seated into socket, seen a few people with horrid speeds, wiggled gently and pushed the connector and speeds shot up...connector wasnt fully home / was making bad contact)
4) dodgy modem lead from socket (lead that connects the modem to the phone socket could be broken internally / failing)
5) bad connection in master socket (master socket might be damaged)
6) nail through phone wire somewhere (suprisingly common...carpet fitters are renowed for it...explaining why BT usually try to pin them along the skirting boards)
7)water ingress in cable from pole (my problem, now resolved)
8) aluminium line
9) really long line run from exchange (can happen, depends on the way the lines were laid years ago.
Unlikely to get compensation unless BT clearly at fault and 99.999% of the time its due to either the modem or the router being wonky, bad connections or poor quality extension cabling.0 -

How long has it been like this?
I had a similar issue at my grandparents house. Really slow internet and no obvious cause. It turned out that they had a second phone plugged in via an extension that was not filtered.
If your mum has additional phones around the house, make sure they have filters attached. Then restart the modem. If it's worked, it will take 3 days for the speeds to actually go up but you can check instantly to see if the sync rate has gone up by checking the router information.0 -

Sorry but I had to.......

Normally theres a 6 letter word starting with f and ending in ed that I would use, but MSE wont let me use that word, so wonky was one I knew they wouldnt filter0
