we work an hour and a half away from home. he is in a large garage with bed food etc and plenty of air. i walk him before i leave for work, when i come home and before bed again. he is only left alone like this 3 or 4 days a week.

have you only had him for a few days at this stage, or is it more like a few weeks?

    Hello again

You could mention this to the vet as they may be able to offer some advice during a routine visit. Or pop to the library and see if they have any dog training or dog behaviour books.

Something that has stuck in my mind from watching something on the telly yonks ago is that when you go out and make a fuss of your dog saying "bye bye" patting him and so on the dog gets really confused. You can practice him getting used to you not being there by calmly leaving the room and not saying anything, looking at him or making any other signal to him that something's about to happen. Make a big fuss of him when you return. I think the aim is to not work the dog up too much when he's about to be left alone, and that being alone every now and again just happens without any fuss. Hope you see what I mean!

I'd love to have a dog but my kitties (rescue kitties of course!) would be horrified. One of them teases my neighbour's dogs by looking in their glass back door and flaunting himself, but he's not so brave when the dogs are out.

Has your new dog got a name btw?

I wouldn't worry too much if you've only had him since Sunday (although its awful listening to them cry), he is still probably just confused and once he is reassured that he is staying with you permanently he will settle - mine behaved exactly the same, and Dogs Trust were satisfied that it was all pretty normal. In his lovely simple doggy head he is probably wondering when he is going back to his 'real' home....When he realises how good he has it at your house he will stop wanting to go anywhere!! Good luck

By the way, Assisi Animal Sanctuary in Conlig (outside Bangor) has a 'no kill' policy.

They never put a healthy animal down.
