Hi,
my son and my husband both have xbox and when both playing, either one of them gets disconnected or just has really bad lagging.
The downstairs one is directly connected to router/modem and my son's upstairs has an xbox wireless connector.
Does anyone know if we would need anything else or do anything to improve? (apart from them not being on at the same time obviously!)
Thanks!

I suggested you go to speedtest.net and check what speed your getting, if its around (or less than) 512KB you will struggle to play online with 2 consoles.
Also are they playing the same game or different games?Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
hey buzzlightyear.....same here in our house! we don't have a wireless thingy though, we have a wire which we bought from Game for about £15. works a treat:beer:0

Do you mean an ethernet cable?
Hard wiring will help, but if your internet speed is extremly low it wont make any difference.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
At least 2meg for 2 xboxes playing online is minimum I would say.
And also hard wiring is a must.0 -

Your not far off. We can manage with 1 MB if we are playing the same game together, i.e Modern Warfare 2 online, in the same lobby. If we decide, or should I say the misses decides to play something else like call of duty 4 lets say, if we dont have 1.5mb one of us will get major lag.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

WOW, you lucky sod lol 9MB I don't even get half of that.
Was that the speed when you were getting the issue?
Have you tried connecting both and checked thats your speed at the time, if so does it make any difference?
Is it the wireless one getting lag and being disconnected or are they both doing it independently from each other?
You could try hardwiring the one upstairs to see if it makes a difference, you'll need a very long cat5 cable though, not ideal as you will have a wire trailing from your router but if you have a long cat5 kicking about you could test it.
You could also try your router settings, make sure the MAC addresses are on the Known list.
Also when you log into MW2 and you enter the lobby on the left it says NAT type, you need that to be "open" ideally (3 levels in all Open, Moderate and strict). If its strict it will be a problem with the settings in your router. You can look around the net for a solution if it is router issues but I always find it easier and far quicker just to contact Tech Support of the router and they can usually giveb you the correct settings quickly.
Sorry I can't be of more helpEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Yes,that was the speed. My husband called virgin on saturday and they did tell him to change certain settings etc....and for the rest of the day it worked fine, problems started again on Sunday. Not 100% as my oh is at work but think it's my son's that disconnects(the one with the wireless connector) and then he wants to reset the router which messes up my oh game downstairs!
Thanks for the info when logging on to mw2,will get oh to try when he gets home.0 -
If it is not convenient to connect both XBoxes directly to your router you may want to consider a home plug? I use this > http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/XAVB1004.aspx"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

is there much latency added using those homeplug things?
random thought on the xboxes: is it just a bandwidth issue or could there be some form of ip / NAT issue cropping up when you put the 2 machines on? outside my area of expertise so can just ask....0
