I am just wondering how much you need to earn in a year to be taxed on it. Because I heard that up to a certain figure is non taxable.
I earnt £4659.36 in the tax year '06 - '07 and was taxed £420.48.
Is this ok?
Thanks for any help.

The Personal Allowance for FY 2006-07 was £5,035. This is how much you can earn before they start deducting income tax. The corresponding Tax Code was 503L. What was your Tax Code for that year?Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Doesn't look it.
The basic personal allowance (PA) in 06-07 was £5035. Below this figure you would not normally be due to pay any tax. But that is a general statement and may not be the case if you received any benefit in kind (eg company car) which reduces the PA?
Alternatively did you change jobs ... and not have the right Code number?
Detail of jobs / P45 / P60 figures needed to give you the full picture? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Na I was working for Tesco from the April until September of that year. Then I relocated to the south of Wales, from the north. And was unemployed until April of 2007.
I was just checking my P45 tonight and wondered if it was refundable?
Thanks0 -
Also, I'm curious as to whether I should have a P60 for that year? I have my P45 given to me by my employer when I left. However I have no P60 to confirm that all I earnt is the the amount shown on the P45 that year. I don't think I could have misplaced it as I have everything filed, however, there is no sign of it!!
How do I prove what I earnt that year and what I paid tax?0 -
You don't get a P60 if you have a P45 for the same job.
Did you receive any taxable benefits whilst unemployed?0 -
Ah that makes sense then! Phew!
I didn't recieve anything at all benefit wise for the entire time I was unemployed. Ended up using my credit cards, overdraft, etc. Which is why I ended up in debt, it all stemmed from that 6 month period
Thankfully I'm finally on the road to recovery 3 years later and am looking for anything I'm owed. I worked out I'm owed £116 the following year due to being on emergency tax the whole year, I don't think I ever gave them my P45. Ooops!
So that brings it to about £540 I paid which I shouldn't have, that's quite a nice little bonus0 -

It should be in the circumstances you describe ... all of it.
Write to your current HMRC office and enclose the P45 for 06-07 asking for a refund. Also give them the applicable data for the following year.
You only get a P60 from an employer you're with at the 5th AprilIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
If you started work in April a P45 for the previous year would have been useless. Better that you still have it - makes your claim a lot simpler and quicker.0

Aha! Makes sense now!
Thanks very much for enlightening me. I now have a very wide smile on my face!0 -
In requesting this money back shall I include my bank details in the letter I send? To hasten the process?0
