Incontinence products for children?

Hi I wonder if anyone can offer some advice please. My dd is 5 and has CP. She is night time incontinent and until recently she was provided with size 6 Pampers but her new delivery is some sort of xs adult nappy. It is very bulky and when you pull the side tabs to take it off the front rips opens up and the material comes out. She is quite upset by it. Just wondering if anyone gets anything else that might be worth me asking for? thanks x

  • We had a great deal of trouble when my son grew out of his pullups a few years ago - the continence service wanted him to wear adult sized products because they were less expensive.

After many months, we finally succeeded in getting Huggies pyjama pants for him. Now he wears Libero Night Comforts.

Please don't accept nappies that are too big for your daughter. Explain her distress and also the additional work for you - if they are too large, there will be leakage, and as a parent of a disabled child, I'm sure you have enough to do without having to change your daughter more frequently, not to mention the bedding! You might have to be stubborn, but the continence service can order something more suitable for you daughter. There are products available, although they might not want to order them. Get the support of your doctor, social worker, carer's centre, whoever you can think of, if necessary.

    Good luck x

Are pads an option, or does it need to be nappies?

  • my sons got spina bifida and is also 5 years old he wears the libero night comforts too :)

i do think these are a really good product as my son has no feeling bladder or bowel and i think these are just like the dry nights night time pants you can buy as thats what i was using on him till the liberos came through :)

  • my local 99p store has Huggies nightime pull up pants for....99p!! Age 4-7 only ..not sure how many, but regular sized packet.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • Your pct may have changed continence products as they have to do this every few years:confused:. In the first instance, ask the why the change?

Go to your continence service, and put in writing that the new products are not suitable (keep a diary to detail the problems that you have with them). You can request to go to a special panel held by your pct to request the products that your daughter needs - you will need to put a strong case forward!
Its a fight, but I know of a few people that have got the products that their child needs. They dont advertise that you can challenge the standard products given, but my head of continuing care at the pct informed me about it.(we have a specific problem on one day a week due to timings, but decided against panel, as we dont have enough given to him anyway, and have to supplement them with pampers which we use at that time.)

Hi and thank you all for your replies. I phoned to complain but was told there was no other option. I will start a diary then get the support of some of the professionals involved.

Longhotbath - can I ask a question! Whats pct?

    Thanks again
  • the pct is the primary care trust.

    Best wishes, LHB

Hi my son is on the pampers size 6 from the clinic but they dont fit aswell as size 6 huggies these seem to be bigger , I no you have to pay for them but its better than the horrible big things thats the next spet up from the pampers.
I was told to keep my son in the pampers for as long as I cud but I dont want him getting sores.
Apparently they also do pants with a pad but I dont think were ready to try them yet. Good luck x
