Real Fire place/ Replacing surround /tiles

Hi

sorry if this is a dim question, but I want to replace the fire surround on my open fire - does it need to conform to certain spec to go with open fire as opposed to gas/electric - guessing it does

also the tiles, they are shaped around the fire in an arch shape - actual curved tiles, they are ok but I would like to replace as some are cracked and the colour does not go with what I want in the room,

what is the best way to go about this, sorry if I have not made myself clear, typing this whilst doing 3 other tasks :-)

    just chisel them all off.
when you say curved tiles. what do you mean exactly?
usually tiles are cut to shape on site.

    Hi

I think I will need to post some pictures, so will take some tonight and post, the tiles - which I think are from when the house was built - 1950's are actually curved, so not sure how they are done

    like the ones shown below.....

    image_products_curved_01_shadow.JPG&h=78&w=90&usg=__bTrUyLmuAY-ROaN1F-Okx1xEuzw=

So not sure if I have to replace like for like or what, never having done anything like this before, I could even live with the tiles, kind of a blue/green/grey colour but some of them (2 to be precise), are broke at the base of the fire

    any ideas welcomed

    thanks
