Study whilst on IS/CA

Can somebody tell me the rules in relation to study and being on Income Support and C Allowance?

I am doing a cource via Open University which I think is ok to do whilst on benefit? My partner is about to start one also, however has classes to attend to. These last 2 hours a week. Also with some 6 hour classes.

Will our study effect Income support or Carers Allowance?

Thanks

  • I was allowed to study part time for a degree whilst on IS and CA. I also had the courses paid for and recveived £250 a year grant as a mature student. I think the maximum study time allowed (including assignments, reading, etc) was 21 hours a week.

I graduated last July with an upper second class honours :j

I can not see anything on the DWP website. I assume we will be required to inform the DWP even though they probably are aware due to funding being granted?

I read that as on Income Support I can study as many hours as I like due to me being sick/disabled. However if I get grants for living expenses this will effect my IS.

    Is this correct?

You cannot get Carer's Allowance if:
    • you are on a course of full-time education
    • you are on holiday from a course of full-time education

Full-time education means 21 hours or more of supervised study each week undertaken through a school, college, university or similar educational establishment. This includes time spent on related exercises, experiments, projects or examinations

    Can I get Income Support?

    It is for people who:
    • are 16 to 59 years old
    • have a low income
    • work less than 16 hours a week
    • are not in full-time study
    • do not get Jobseeker's Allowance
    • do not have savings above £16,000, and
    • live in Great Britain

Disabled students can study full time and be in receipt of IS (assuming Student Finance is not more than the relevant IS amount).
    Gone ... or have I?

As it is via the Open Uni in my case I have no classes to attend. Therefore doubt effect me.

If the OU say 16 hours a week study is required. What is the case if I decide to study 12 hours a day 5 days a week? Not alot I guess?

However my partner has to attend classes ranging from 2 hours to 6 hours per week plus study at home.

Supervised, what is the DWP defination of this?
