Cat Question, advice needed please?

My cat doesn't appear to be well so will probably need to go to the vet tomorrow. But I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar and could explain what it was.

My girl cat Lottie has since yesterday started to cry when we get to near her and doesn't appear to want to be touched. She is mostly off her food and is holding her tail in a strange manner. Where it parts from her spine, it usually stands straight up and this weekend she has been holding it permanently down. The fat end is raised slightly in a slight bend but mostly down, hope that makes sense.

I half wondered if she was calling for male cats and is holding her tail in this manner to show she is fertile, but she has been neutered. Could she still get mating feelings? She is 3 and we've never seen this before.

The other possibility is another cat 3 doors away, is bulling my male cat Harvey and the male cat Yaz next door. He has persistantly started fights and we've had to take Harvey to the vets with absesses and cuts etc. Yaz this week got caught by this bully cat and he bit his tail causing Yaz to go to the vets and have antibiotics, he might need his tail amputating by the end of the week.

Lottie has never been involved in a fight she isn't confrontational and is very timid, she runs away and is scared stiff of this bully cat, whereas the boys tend to stand their ground and come off worse.

We are wondering though if Lottie has been caught by the bully and he has done something to her tail but right at the base near her body. Her behaviour is very strange.

This bully is so persistant he comes into our garden and sometimes sunbathes and comes into the utility where ours sleep. Mine are constantly on watch out for the bully and check the flap before they go out. They seem more nervous and dont settle that well.

We had thought about talking to the owner about this situation, but realistically they can't tell their cat where to go like you can a dog, they are independant. We have also found out from another neighbour that it wouldn't be wise to talk to the bully's owner as she is very confrontational and not a very nice women. Her son is a bully and picks on small children and she wouldn't do anything anyway. We got lovely neighbours either side of us and dont wish to start a feud 3 doors away. So for now we are leaving this, buts its so tempting to forward the vets bills onto her.

I just dont know what to do, the problem has been going on with this bully since we moved in a year ago and its just not getting any better!!

Sorry for the long post.

is there any chance she could have been nicked by a car? is she peeing as normal?
I ask because we had a cat who sounded like yours. vet said she must have been running away as a car came by and that she sees this a lot. if her cry is a bit pittiful she could be in pain.
our cat did not need to have her tail amputated, the end bit just never worked as well. she was ok after getting some pain medication (though pity she had to be in pain until we could get to the vet) and we kept her in while it healed. for a while she let out a short yowl when she jumped down from counters and things...
I know it's stressful when an animal you care for is not right. I'm sure the vet will know what to do. let us know.

One of my cats had the same symptoms, unfortunately, the tail was broken. You can call the emergency vet, obviously a call out charge would apply, just call your own vet's number and listen to the recorded message.

Ive no advice for your poorly cat other than get well soon kitty !!

As for the bully cat, maybe you could try and deter it from your garden, we have 4 cats and they used to scratch the furniture. In the end we used an aerosol can of saline (used for contact lenses) the noise of the spray always scared them enough that they never actually got wet, and after a few weeks all we had to do was pick up the can and they scarpered. It might be enough to keep this cat out of your garden and give your cats a sanctuary.

    good luck

  • Thank you all for your help and advice. My partner has just told me that he tried the water gun thing but it doesn't seem a big deterant.

We will take her to the vets tomorrow.

hi- could be any number of things like you've said:

'calling' - it is possible that a small amount of ovarian tissue left behind post neutering could cause this behavior

    broken/dislocated tail....

cat bite at the base of the tail.........

good luck at the vets- keep us all updated :)
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Hope it goes alright at the vets tomorrow.
Is she going for a p alright? When mine was poorly he had cystitis:eek: but from the way he was acting I thought he had been kicked or hit by a car.

My Mum and Dad have three cats. The Persian, depsite being dressed still calls - apparently this is quite common. As tankgirl1 said there could be a small amount of tissue left, apart from that if your cat is eating normally, there may not be a problem. A trip to the vet will however, alleviate your fears!
    Waddle you do eh?

That is a good possibility - she would probably be squatting a lot if she is.

Blocked anal scent glands is another.

General things like an abcess from a bite, bee sting, air rifle pellet could also show up this way.

If she was spayed properly she shouldn't go into season, but I have heard of a few cases where the spaying hasn't been done very well.

There is a type of tumour that develops on/around the anus as well, so I guess that is a vague possibility, although it would probably have been quite noticeable before it started to cause a reaction in the cat.

No doubt there are a whole bunch of other reasons that a vet would know of.

As a guess I would say that here tail is damaged, especially if she begins to cry when you go near her. If her tail is only up at the end then it's unlikely that she is calling for a mate but her tail being damaged either at the point where is goes up or as others have said at the base of the tail.

Get her to the vet and let us know x

Hi Bailey, just noticed this, hows your cat today? Hope shes ok.
We had a bit of a scare with one of our cats yesterday, he seemed like he was in a state of shock and cried when I tried to pick him up. I put him in my bedroom with food water and litter tray, he was eating ok, just didnt want us humans to go near him, we kept an eye on him, and last night when I went in to watch some tv with him, he tried to jump out of the window, which I'd opened a bit wider when I was in there, so I realised he was on the mend then, hes fine this morning, letting us pick him up, nibbling us and just generally being his old self. I have a feeling someone has maybe kicked him or something. He doesnt seem to be in any pain, but I'm still keeping him in for a few days, and if he shows any sign of being in pain, hes going to the vets.
As for your neighbourhood bully cat, do you know if hes been castrated? How well do you get on with his owners? Maybe if he hasnt been fixed, you could have a polite word, suggest they have him done? I hope you can get some thing sorted out, it sounds like your poor babies dont have any fun.
