Restoring Email Settings & Emails - Vista

Options
Hi guys,

I backed up all the docs & emails on an external hd & reinstalled Vista.

Does anyone know how to import the email settings & emails back into the clean machine from the external hard hd?

For the life of me I cant work out how....

So far I have word searched on here & the microsoft site.

It seems easytransfer is between 2 computers & not hd to pc...

  • I think I can do it in backup & restore but this looks like it has to be done as a complete restore?

    Don't use backup and restore.
Are you using windows mail, and what (and how) did you back up.

Well, transferring the documents should not pose a problem; that could simply be a case of drag and drop. Email however: what are you using - client email, web email...
  • Used backup & restore centre to get a backup of docs/pics & emails onto an external drive.

Done a complete re-install of vista & the programs I wanted to keep.

The email used on the machine was the standard "windows mail" that is on it.

I have 2 xp machines & this vista one & I have got to say I hate Vista..

I'm not too familiar with the Vista backup and restore centre, but personally I would be wary of just restoring a backup created on one build straight into a new build.
I normally create a folder called restore, and then use backup/restore selecting to restore to an alternate location - the folder I created. Once the files are restored, I then copy them back into the correct locations, and in the case of the email, use the import function in windows mail (file >import >messages >windows mail 7 >browse to the folder with the emails). You would probably have to recreate the accounts manually if you didn't export them to .iaf
That way I know that nothing will get overwritten by mistake.

It's possible that a direct restore will work, but I haven't tried it myself.
