This is frankly ridiculous

Hi guys. I am posting this on behalf of my girlfriend, a 2nd year physics student who is obviously dependent on her student loan installments. She has a halifax student current account with an arranged interest-free overdraft of £2000. Between the dates of 08/01 & 11/01 The balance went to a minimum of -£2044.59, then the loan installment came in on the 11th. She just got a letter saying she has been charged £20 for the 4 days (5 pounds a day?), plus a 24 quid unexplained charge.

I thought the point of them introducing this new "£1 per day for arranged, £5 per day for unarranged" thing was meant to make charges simpler, and replace these bigger lump sum charges?

Anything she can do? She doesn't have much money as it is, this is the last thing she needs. :(

I would suggest your girlfriend contacts her bank and asks them to explain the £24 charge which she clearly doesn't understand :)

    Are you sure?
£20 is for them paying an item taking the account overdrawn and are you certain the other fee was not £28?

Thanks for the link. After checking it was indeed £28.
I understand where they have come from at least. It's got nothing on my natwest fee fiasco about a year ago, had to pay almost £200 for accidentally going £2.45 overdrawn!
  • If this is the first occasion this has happened to your girlfriend then ask them whether they would refund the charges as a gesture of goodwill. Otherwise, Martin will have new advice this week.

It is. Would you recommend going to a branch or ringing up?

I'm still unsure about these charges; I thought it would just have been these?

Student accounts do not incur their new fee structure which was in their intial press release and which I have confirmed directly with their customer relations team.
I would get her to go into the branch and if that does not work then to write to their customer relations with regards to this issue.

...the changes apply to all accounts, except the student account, where an overdraft facility is available....
